SIMPLE EXERCISE FOR IMPROVING POSTURE

Posture

As you know from reading my book The StayAhead Method, posture is one of the most important aspects of fitness. Yet, sadly, some people never give themselves the gift of tall posture. Or at best, we only remember to stand up straight during yoga class.

The problem is that if you don’t form the consistent habit of sitting and standing with tall posture now, you may lose the ability to stand tall later in life. That would be a bummer, to say the least.

Now, I have a question for you…

Why should we care so much about posture? Certainly, tall posture helps you look better and feel more energized. Important benefits, for sure. But even more important is how basic body function is negatively impacted by chronic poor posture. Specifically, with slouched posture, the space inside the chest cavity is reduced. This causes three problems.

1. The lungs need space to expand and draw vital oxygen into the body. When you lose posture, breathing gets shallower and shallower.

2. The heart needs space to pulse without restriction. When you lose posture, unnecessary pressure is placed on the heart, blood pressure increases, and circulation decreases.

3. The digestive muscles need space to constrict and relax to move food through the body. This is called peristalsis. Without internal space, this digestive process is compromised.

It’s motivating to remember these three reasons for tall posture. So remember…

Stand tall to give your lungs, heart, and digestion the space they need to function optimally.

There are many ways to improve posture. One of my favorite posture exercises involves increasing awareness of shoulder positioning. When the shoulders round forward, posture is doomed. Don’t let this happen to you. Watch this short video:
